Without a doubt, Nokia Express Music together with Big Fish surely knows how to throw a beach party. Fiercer than ever before, Fierce Angels invaded the island. Not wanting to be left out, die hard Big Fish fans from Manila flocked to Boracay to participate in the revelries. Seeing the special guest alone, Lady Victoria, who looked twice as fierce playing the saxophone in her black bikini and mesh cover up was enough. DJs Craig McGivern and Johnboy Lee were also present to participate in the summer celebration.

There are excellent movies whose stories are too depressing for me to watch. I haven’t and never will question their award-worthiness, but I will never sit through them. (Warning: Secondhand spoilers straight ahead.)
1. Boys Don’t Cry
Hilary Swank plays a girl who’s really a boy at heart and he/she gets brutalized by a bunch of crazed alpha males for (among many things) being different and having a girlfriend. Hilary looks great as a guy and this 1999 movie gave her a Best Actress Oscar. I can picture the Oscar people saying, “Just give her the damn award and let’s be done with this flood of sadness.”

It was just our luck that Sheryl intended to go to Bangui that afternoon. And since H and I got the inabel part of our tour out of the way, we gladly joined her. Four of her friends (three based in Laoag) tagged along–or rather, H and I tagged along with Sheryl and her friends!
We made a pit stop at the “biscocho-han” in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte. The place was called Pasuquin Bakery, and their plastic bags had labels proudly proclaiming “famous maker of the delicious biscocho, pride of the north.” Our unofficial tour guides insisted that we try the soft biscocho, which is sort of like an anise-laced pan de sal. Sheryl told us that these were so popular that they were even exported to Hawaii! (more…)
After going all the way to Davao last month, the next trip on my list was all the way up north: Ilocos Norte! H and I booked a flight months ago so we got el cheapo tickets–much cheaper than it would’ve cost to drive all the way there. The disadvantage, though, of not having a car is that you’ll have to figure out how to get around the province. If you’re unwilling to shell out about P3,000, you’ll have to commute, hitchhike, or wait for a kindly soul to offer you a ride.
We had a budget to stick to (read: We were being cheap), so we didn’t get our own vehicle and were prepared to take trikes, jeeps, and buses to get to our desired destinations. We didn’t have a proper itinerary, but the following were on my list:

42 Below paved the way for all the craziness as they launched formally at the Embassy Super Club. The brand’s very own Ambassador and Vodka Professor Jacob Briars were present to mix out-of-this-world cocktails for the guests. The night started off with a few drinks to cool off and a brief story about the most awarded vodka brand. The Vodka Professor also demonstrated how to mix several drinks. He even came up with summer breeze, a unique cocktail specially concocted for the Filipinos. To perfect a wild and crazy night, Embassy’s very own DJ Owens Sun played for everyone.

Over the weekend, I caught a program on the Lifestyle Network called How to Look Good Naked. I loved the premise of the show—it’s “the fashion series that shows you how to look fantastic with your clothes on or off no matter what your body shape—and all without a surgeon’s scalpel in sight.”
Each week, they take one woman who is incredibly insecure about her body, and in a span of four weeks, they get her to change not just the way she dresses, but the way she views herself. Think of it as the anti-Swan. It’s all about coming to terms with your body, and lovin’ and workin’ what you’ve got. And if you think it’s just a wardrobe makeover, think again–the last thing on the list is a nude photo shoot! By then, the ladies have to be comfortable in their own skin, instead of simply hiding behind clothes that play up their assets.

I borrowed this book from M, and he says I could keep it. That’s how much he didn’t like it.
I was told that it was a bit of a struggle to read the first half–I realized it was because I thought the writer was a bit self-indulgent, over-describing things that didn’t need detailed imagery. “Exactly!” agreed M. “And his descriptions aren’t even that great. It’s like he likes hearing himself talk.”
